In Sea of Thieves, you don’t just sail the seas and look for gold.
There is also an epic story to tell. These come in the form of Tall Tales, Sea of Thieves’ answer to hardest quests.
These have you embarking on an adventure & ending up at the legendary Shores Of Gold.
Checkpoints have made it easier to play Tall Tales, but even the most experienced pirates will still find it difficult.
So, Sea Dogs and Scallywags, watch out!
Because spoiler warning here: there will be spoilers for several Tall Tales ahead.
5. The Cursed Rogue
The 2nd Tall Tale isn’t too difficult on paper.
But the last battle can bring bigger problems than you expected.
Captain Briggsy is the boss fight at the end of The Cursed Rogue Tall Tale. She has way too much health and can call up a lot of Skeletons to keep you busy.
The problem is that her most dangerous attack is a shock wave that can throw you into the water if it doesn’t kill you.
This fight goes on for a long time, especially if you keep falling into the water.
The longer this fight goes on, the more likely it is that another player ship will come to see what’s going on.
And since your crew will be busy fighting, you probably won’t see them coming.
There’s always the threat of piracy in Sea of Thieves – but dying to it here when you’re so close to the end really stings!
4. Revenge Of The Morningstar
If you’ve had trouble with riddles so far, I have bad news: they get much harder.
At the beginning of Revenge of the Morningstar, you have to change your pirates’ clothes so they look like a different crew. This is pretty cool.
The hard part is that you are given a book of symbols with words that match them, then a page written in those symbols.
You have to flick back and forth through your quest book trying to decipher the passage, and when you finally do. Yeah, it doesn’t make sense.
The passage is written in riddles, with lines like “From Cave Walk Rising Sun,” which means “Starting at the Cave, walk East” (because the sun rises in the East).
Writing everything down and figuring it out the old-fashioned way, with a pen and paper, makes this Tall Tale much easier.
3. Art Of The Trickster
You will have to solve some very hard riddles in The Art of the Trickster.
You have to line up landmarks with a special Spyglass, but you don’t get much help, and it’s easy to forget where you were if you get attacked.
At the end of this Tall Tale, the trouble really starts to show its ugly face.
You have to get through a series of traps that are made of metal. And all it takes is one mistake to kill you.
If platforming isn’t your strong suit, you’re going to die a lot.
So go slowly, and if someone can come with you, they can bring you back to life if you fall.
There’s a boss battle at the end of the Tall Tale, but compared to what you’ve just been through, they’re a pushover.
2. Stars Of A Thief
It’s one thing to use a map to get around.
But using the stars to find your way is a whole different thing, and there’s a reason we don’t do that anymore.
Stars of a Thief is the third Tall Tale, and it shows you right away how hard the puzzles in Sea of Thieves can be.
You are given a magical Spyglass, and you have to figure out where you are by looking at the glowing star patterns.
The biggest issue with this Tall Tale is it’s so easy to get lost. And if you simply get turned around at any point, you can lose a ton of progress.
If you can figure the clues out, more power to you.
But it’s easy to get overwhelmed, and there’s not much in the way of advice or help.
1. The Shores Of Gold
This is why the last Tall Tale in the main story is the hardest quest in the game:
The Shores of Gold is a true test of any pirate’s skills, with puzzles, platforming, traps, and a big boss fight in a vault full of pirate treasure.
Every part of your gameplay will be tested here.
And if you have any weaknesses, you can be sure that the Shores of Gold will show them.
But there is one part that is particularly hard.
It’s the part where you have to walk on thin planks and jump across small platforms in the dark.
There have been a lot of pirate deaths here.
And there is no way to skip it.
Only a pirate with many skills has a chance of making it out of the Shores of Gold alive and telling the story.
