How Does Savage Loot Work in FFXIV?

Savage Loot content is the top level in Final Fantasy XIV, and as such, it gives out big prizes.

In Shadowbringers, Savage Loot is given out in coffers instead of as individual pieces, so every player has a good chance of getting an improvement.

Upgrading your gear for any kind of raid can be a pain, to put it mildly.

First, you have to get your items to the minimum level needed for the raid. However, that’s just the start of a whole new set of problems.

To get past that minimum ilvl floor, you have to reliably clear the content, hope that the one item you need drops, and then hope that no one else in your party rolls need on it.

It’s very annoying. And that’s being nice. I usually use a lot more “f-words” to talk about gears.

Most Savage Loot comes in the form of purses, which, if you’re not already familiar with them, are just items that hold a piece of gear.

Before you open it, you don’t know what the gear will be.

But it will always be useful for the job you are doing now.

This means that every week, everyone in the group has the same chance of getting the gear they need.

I think this is a huge improvement over the old method, in which players would have to do some very hard tasks for no reward at all. You might have gotten the gear you needed, but you lost the roll. Maybe nothing at all fell for you.

Now that gear comes from coffer drops, everyone has the same chance to roll need and get something good, no matter what part or job they are currently playing.

It works out much better.

It might seem scary because everyone can now roll on everything, but in the end, you’ll be glad for the changes.

In Short

Savage loot in FFXIV works as follows:

  • Each Savage raid drops a maximum of 3 coffers per week.
  • The number of coffers that drop depends on the number of players in the party who have not cleared the raid for the week.
  • If all 8 players in the party have not cleared the raid for the week, then 3 coffers will drop.
  • If 1-4 players in the party have already cleared the raid for the week, then 1 coffer will drop.
  • If 5+ players in the party have already cleared the raid for the week, then no coffers will drop.
  • The coffers contain gear that is 20 item levels higher than the respective normal raid tier’s loot.
  • The gear in the coffers is always relevant to the job that you are currently playing.
  • Players can roll on the gear in the coffers using the need/greed/pass system.
  • The player who wins the roll will be able to open the coffer and obtain the gear.
  • Players can only roll on gear from their first clear of the raid for the week.
  • If you do not win a roll on gear from your first clear, you will not be able to roll on any other gear from later clears until the weekly reset.

The weekly reset for Savage loot is on Tuesday at 1:00 AM Pacific Time.

Here are some additional things to keep in mind about Savage loot:

  • Savage raids also drop materials that can be used to augment the current weekly-capped tomestone equipment to the same item level as Savage gear.
  • Savage raids are a challenging content, and it is not guaranteed that you will be able to clear them every week.
  • If you are struggling to clear Savage raids, you can join a static, which is a group of players who raid together regularly.

What Else Is Different About Savage Loot?

You only get one chance per raid wing per week to get Savage Loot.

So, if you’re on Savage and trying to get through Eden’s Gate, you have one roll for each of Resurrection, Descent, Inundation, and Sepulture.

If you don’t win your roll, you won’t get any loot until the next weekly restart.

This version is much harder than the normal one, in which you can run the content over and over until you get your promised weekly piece of loot.

To get all the loot you can, you also have to clear the wings.

If you skip all the wings before Inundation one week, you won’t get any of the loot from those wings.

So, if you want to get the most out of Savage hunting, you should do them in order.

If anyone in the party has already won the fight that week, the party will lose points.

If between one and four players have already beaten the wing, you will only get one treasure box.

For five or more, there will be no boxes at all, but you’ll still get your weekly Apocrypha.

What’s Apocrypha, And How Can I Use It?

You will get an Apocrypha book each week when you win a fight for the first time. You can save these up and quickly trade them for sure loot with Yhal Yal in Eulmore.

This means that even if you have terrible luck with your rolls, you will still get an upgrade for all the time you’ve spent Savage hunting.

Using Apocrypha to buy new gear will take longer than just rolling for it.

But it’s clear that we can’t always count on that.

In XIV, going on a “savage raid” can be quite tiring.

It takes a lot of time, both on an individual and a group level.

If you didn’t get new items every time you played at this level, it would be easy to lose interest, so the Apocrypha system makes up for that.

If you play raid wings out of order and miss your chances to get loot from the earlier wings, you’ll also miss your weekly Apocrypha from that floor, so keep that in mind.
